In Case You Missed It: Jan. 16 - Jan. 22

This was the week the App Store cracked the 10 billion download mark and we have to say lotsa luck to the Microsoft app store. We hope to see you reach 10 billion downloads sometime around 2025. Bwahahaha! We kid, we kid. The MS app store will never reach 10 billion downloads! Zing! We kid again, we kid. All right, enough comedy, on with the all the news that's fit not to miss, but just in case you did.

Features:

- How the iPad is Making Strides in the Enterprise World - Whatcha gonna do? Haters gonna hate. When the iPad first came out, scoffers said it would never take off with businesses because Apple products never take off in the enterprise market and -- hey there! Whattaya know? Turns out the iPad is making strides with the CEO and CIO crowd.

- 8 Apps for Creating Masterpieces with Your iOS Device - Now, for the rest of us, the iPad (or iPhone/iPod touch) isn't necessarily our business device -- unless our business is getting creative. These 8 apps can handle your itch to make art whether that be twiddling the knobs on a virtual drum machine, looping some sounds for your latest sound creation, turning any drawing into animation, painting your masterpiece, or getting that perfect photo or video.

Reviews:

- iBank Finance Manager Review - Turns out you used those apps in that last article and made some fine music, painted the cover art, and set it all to a cartoon video on YouTube that was a huge hit. Well, bully for you. And now you're rolling in the greenbacks. How are you going to keep track of your royalties and what you have to pay to keep your entourage happy and your rent and the utilities and the never ending parade of people with their hands in your pockets taking a hundred here and hundred there? You've got 99 money problems, and we've got one solution.

- App Showdown: Finding Stuff - Okay, okay, we made that last one up. You aren't that fantastically lucky musician who made the big break -- but you want to go see his show and you want to get dinner before and drinks afterward. Or maybe not. Maybe you want to find anything in the entire world to go and see rather than that horrible musician with that song that everyone in the world is overplaying. Well, how do you find the good stuff to do, and who's going to help you do the finding? There is, you know, an app for that, and it turns out there's more than one.

Reviews:

- How to Automatically Sync Photos From Your iPhone to Dropbox - Sometimes along comes a service you always knew you needed but you only realize it once you read about it. We'll admit, we don't sync our phones as often as probably would be helpful, and yes, it happens that pictures get lost in the shuffle. Then along comes an article so full of win that it hurts you just to read it. This is one of those times, people.

- How To Use iMovie's Hidden Features to Create a Custom Lower Third - We'll admit it: we're suckers for hidden features. Just saying the words "hidden features" entices us, draws us in. We don't want to miss out! We want all the goodies our software offers and we don't want to pass up the chance to find something we never knew we needed or something we've desperately wanted all this time. Check out these hidden features in iMovie and unlock the lower third -- that's where the action's at anyway.

News:

Well, it sure didn't take long from the announcement that Apple was closing in on 10 billion App Store downloads, now we just have to see who won that magic $10,000 iTunes gift card...and maybe whoever won could use some of that money to help out the world with these sharing = caring apps...or at least pick up a copy of Tiki Towers 2...or maybe rocking the Old Skool Sega Genesis 2D action is where it's at for you...but wait, there's more, and with the App Store game action, there is always always always more...and if this 14 year old ever decides to get into making some paid games, you could do worse than dropping some coin in the pockets of a teenager who can unseat Angry Birds from its free app throne...on the meta-tip, consider Game Dev Story, where you play, but then you yourself create and rewrite the game as you go along...where that mad iTunes money won't do you any good? At the Cydia App Store, which is getting a whole lot easier to use...while for enterprise, the iPhone can make the App Store a whole lot harder to use, you know, to keep your employees from wasting time on Angry Birds on company-provided iPhones...either way you slice it, though, when you're actually counting those Benjamins, the Apple mobile revenue stream is the clear and dominant champ.

Of course, we're rounding the horn into February, and this time of the year won't be complete unless we all start putting our backs into turning the cranks on the iPad rumor mill. For example, are these Chinese iPad 2 cases legit, and what do they foretell if true?...while we won't credit every supposed case-based rumor, it wouldn't surprise us in the least if Apple did upgrade their A4 chip to a dual-core A5...and Best Buy's dropping a few mystery SKUs into their database, plus the mystery deepens with LCD parts and a vibrating motor making an appearance...and with dual-core topping the list of everyone's hardware rumor, it's probably a good bet, though these resolution rumors are still not gelling into any definite specs...and if the name John Gruber means anything to you, then give an ear to his claim that Retina Display on the iPad 2 is still a pipe dream...speaking of pipe dreams that just might be too good to be true, Hugh Hefner (who ought to know) claims an uncensored Playboy will be making its way to the iPad...and, of course, after the articles, it's the pictures that come to mind when you think Playboy, which brings us to a confirmation in iOS 4.3 that the iPad 2 is getting some kind of camera action...will it be the same eensy weensy 1MP camera that the iPod touch sports? So sayeth the iOS 4.3 beta.

Lastly, we'd be remiss if we didn't draw your attention to this fine gallery of shots from our own beta launch, that of the Mac|Life Reader Meetup. Meanwhile, readers across the country say, take your free beer & gear tour on the road!
