Apple signs The Beatles

After seemingly endless negotiations, The Beatles? back catalogue is now available on iTunes. Following an announcement on 16th November 2010, remastered versions of the band?s 13 studio albums, the two-volume ?Past Masters? compilition and the ?Red? and ?Blue? collections can be purchased as digital downloads from the iTunes music store, either as complete albums or individual songs. For hardcore fans, there?s also a special 125 digital ?Beatles Box Set?, featuring all the studio albums, ?Past Masters?, bonus material and a video of the 1964 Washington Coliseum concert, the band?s first US show.

?We love the Beatles and are honoured and thrilled to welcome them to iTunes,? said Steve Jobs, Apple?s CEO and long-time Beatles fan. ?It has been a long and winding road to get here. Thanks to The Beatles and EMI, we are now realising a dream we?ve had since we launched iTunes ten years ago.?Sir Paul MCartney is equally upbeat. ?We?re really excited to bring The Beatles? music to iTunes,? he said. ?It?s fantastic to see the songs we originally released on vinyl receive as much love in the digital world as they did the first time around.?

Unfortunately, the prices gives us no cause for celebration. It?s great to be able to buy your favourite Beatles tracks at 99p each, but why would anyone in their right mind pay 10.99 for a digitally-downloaded studio album that you can buy as a brand-new CD for 7.99 on Amazon? Worse still, the ?Red? and ?Blue? collections are going for 17.99 each on iTunes, while Amazon sells them for 17.99 for the two, or 7.99 each (work that one out).
