Apple seems to be doing a boffo job of pushing iPhone users toward their latest and greatest version of iOS, if new data is any indication -- nearly 90 percent of all iPhone users are on some form of iOS 4, with more than 50 percent of those rockin? on the latest, 4.2.1.
ReadWrite Mobile is reporting that Apple appears to have a much more dedicated group of upgraders with the iPhone than competitors such as Google Android. According to data released by the makers of the popular free app Bump, 89.73 percent of the company?s users are on some version of iOS 4.x.
If you?re not familiar with Bump, you?re likely in a small category of iPhone owners -- the free app has been downloaded more than 25 million times between iOS and Android, and its technology is also featured in other software such as the official PayPal app, allowing two iPhone owners to transfer money simply by putting their devices close to each other.
Bump CEO and co-founder David Lieb reveals that a sampling of user data between January 7 and January 10 finds that 89.73 percent of their users are running iOS 4.x -- although that number includes all iOS devices and not just the iPhone. 10.25 percent of Bump users are still running some form of iOS 3.x, while only 0.02 percent are kicking it old school with iOS 2.x.
52.89 percent of those users were running Apple?s latest and greatest, iOS 4.2.1, while 27.50 percent were on iOS 4.1 -- likely a large pool of jailbreakers, since that was the last version to be easily jailbroken and unlocked. The next highest percentage is iOS 3.1.3 users at only 6.43 percent, which likely includes original iPhone models that can?t be upgraded beyond that version.
So how does this data compare to Google?s Android? Shockingly, only 0.4 percent of Android devices are on the most recent version -- in this case, Gingerbread 2.3, which is quite new. However, even data prior to 2.3?s release shows that only 43.4 percent of Android users were running Froyo 2.2, which is still much less than iOS.
