Remember the Boonana trojan horse that was in the wild for Mac OS X last month? A variantthe trojan.osx.boonana.bhas now been discovered that acts in much the same way as the original malware. SecureMac has been able to identify two+ websites that are hosting this trojan via update code for the malware. This is a little different from the original trojan which tricked users into running and installing the malware themselves.
What is this trojan capable of doing? Other than updating itself, it could also log keystrokes and get access to information like usernames and passwords. There is actually a Microsoft version of the same trojan that Microsoft claims is a severe threat for both Mac and Windows. (Hey, they finally have something in common!) However, Linux can be affected to and can lead to the malware joining a botnet.
If you’re worried you may be affected, you can download a removal tool here.
More information about this threat can be found on SecureMac’s site.
