Gruff Rhys: Hotel Shampoo ? review

(Turnstile)

Ordinarily in the life of a rock musician, what goes on tour, stays on tour. But Gruff Rhys ? the furriest of all the Super Furry Animals ? has immortalised 20 years of budget accommodation with an art installation made from all his hotel freebies. Taking in pianos, lounge music, found sounds and Latin influences, his album of the same name is every bit as idiosyncratic. The wistful mellifluousness of his music belies a bleaker outlook on songs such as "At the Heart of Love". "Christopher Columbus", meanwhile, matches his thoughtful lyrics with tuneful inventiveness.
