My iOS feature wish-list

With the latest version of Mac OS X expected to be announced tomorrow, speculation?s rife about what new features it?ll include. And this got me thinking about what we?d like to see in its little sibling, iOS. So here are the five features I?d most like to see. They?re small things, you might say, but the details are vital when it comes to creating a great user experience. Have a read and let us know what you think ? what would you like to see in future versions of iOS?

1. Choose where apps land

When you download an app, its icon automatically plops into the first available space on your Home screens. If you?re organised ?like I am ?the first thing you?ll then do is move it elsewhere, either to another screen or into a folder of similar apps. So why can?t Apple offer you that choice when you download an app or save a web page to your Home screen? If you?re not a fan, there could easily be an option to disable this feature.

2. Cursor keys

I?ve never really liked the way you have to tap and hold on text to reposition your cursor. It?s fiddly and time-consuming, and if you get too near the edge of the screen ? such as with a URL in Safari?s address bar ? the magnifying glass and your text disappears off the top of the screen (see below). All this could be so much better if Apple just gave us left and right cursor keys on the on-screen keyboard (and it's been done ?iA Writer for iPad has them). Alright, there?s no space on the iPhone's main QWERTY keyboard, but the keys on one of the symbols screens could be shrunk to fit additional controls in.

3. Swipe to create new web pages

Swiping the screen to move around iOS has become second nature. So much so, in fact, that I often find myself trying to open a blank page in Safari by swiping the last one to the left on the pages screen.iPhone says no ?I must instead tap New Page to get to where I want to be.

4. Alter suggested searches

As you type into Safari?s search bar, it comes up with a list of suggestions. Tapping one of these has the effect of completing your words and pressing Search, all in one fell swoop. That?s handy, but what if you want to add something to the suggested search term? I?d rather tapping the term just entered that text into the search field, leaving me to add what I want and tapSearch when I?m ready.

5. Don?t flash my password up as I type

In most cases, I like how the iPhone?s keyboard flashes up the letter as you press it. But why can?t you disable this when it comes to entering passwords? Furthermore, I don?t want it showing the last letter I typed in the password field before it turns it to a black dot. If I?m standing on a crowded train, who knows whether the person next to me is reading off and memorising my password as I type?
